Five Years Wrapped in a Box

Alecia's birthday is next week. She will be eight! Where has the time gone? It seems like just a few weeks ago she came to live with us with her one box of belongings and a backpack.
A five year-old's life wrapped up in one single box. It's sad. That box does not signify the enormous amount of heartache, hurt and let-downs felt by her. That box can not contain the story of being failed by the people who are supposed to be there for you. That box simply contained a few pair of jeans, a couple sweat shirts and a handful of pictures. Pictures of some people she didn't even recognize.
That was two and half years ago. Now the girl has so many things that her room can't hold them all. She has totes of clothes in the attic that have been there since we moved because we don't have room for them! She has more mementos in the china cabinet than I do!
Alecia used to be sassy as a safety mechanism. If you could love her through her attitude than you gained her acceptance. Now she is just plain silly. Unless she honestly doesn't care for you; then she will just plain ignore you.
I am so proud of who she has become today. A well adjusted, beautiful, fun, loving, protective sister and loyal daughter. She is comfortable in who she is and how she got here. It is her story; and while the beginning of it unfolded at the mercy of others, she will be the one who decides how it ends.
Alecia was my first girl to call me "Mom" but it was so worth the wait. I couldn't have picked or birthed a better choice for our family. She is such a beautiful girl who sparkles from within. I am blessed to have her as my daughter. And I can't wait to see what her future holds.
Ehh, well we can skip the parts from 12-20; right?
